Nutiva
The Nutiva Story - from Nutiva
Nutiva was founded in 1999 by eco-entrepreneur John W. Roulac, a passionate advocate of holistic living and the author of four books on composting and industrial hemp. The company is the third successful organization Roulac has founded since establishing the modern home-composting movement across the United States in the 1990s.
Pioneering Hemp
Nutiva introduced the worldπs first hemp bar at a time when public awareness of hempπs nutritive gifts and ecological benefits was nearly nonexistent. The company provides the American publicπs favorite hemp, flax, and coconut foods and shelled hempseed extra-virgin coconut oil.
Persistence and Victory
In August of 1999, the United States Drug Enforcement Agency and US Customs seized a load of Canadian hempseed and tried to prevent Nutiva from selling its legal, drug-free hempseed foods. Nutiva, in a united effort with customers and the entire hemp industry, launched a grassroots campaign that resulted in the federal government ending its hemp trade embargo.
Then, on October 9, 2001, the DEA issued new hemp regulations. Once again, Nutiva pursued both legal and grassroots strategies, resulting in the Federal 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling on February 6, 2004, that hemp foods are legal to consume.
