Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang

Dispels wind, eliminates dampness, scatters cold, alleviates impediment and stops pain, boosts the liver and kidneys and supplements the qi and blood*

Enduring wind damp cold impediment complicated by liverkidney dual vacuity and qi and blood insufficiency manifesting as chronic rheumatoid arthritis (RA), osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatic sciatica, lumbar strain, lumbar intervertebral disc herniation, pain in the midline and back during pregnancy, hemiplegia due to stroke, and the sequelae of poliomyelitis*

Within this formula, Du Huo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), is the sovereign. It tracks down and searches out hidden or deeplying wind, scatters cold, and eliminates dampness from the lower burner and sinews and bones. Hua Jiao (Pericarpium Zanthoxyli), emits and scatters wind cold from the yin channels and sweeps away wind dampness from out of the sinews and bones, thus stopping pain. Fang Feng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), dispels wind evils and overcomes dampness. Qin Jiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae), eliminates wind dampness and relaxes the sinews. Sang Ji Sheng (Herba Taxilli), Du Zhong (Cortex Eucommiae), and Niu Xi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), dispel wind dampness while simultaneously supplementing the liver and kidneys. Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chuan Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Shu Di (cooked Radix Rehmanniae), and Bai Shao (Radix Alba Paeoniae), nourish the blood while simultaneously quickening the it. Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), and Fu Ling (Poria), supplement the qi and fortify the spleen. Rou Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi), warms and frees the flow of the blood vessels, and Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), regulates and harmonizes all these other medicinals. Thus this formula as a whole attacks and dispels evils at the same time as it supplements and supports the righteous.*

According to Him-che Yeung in Handbook of Chinese Herbs and Formulas, Vol. 2, the standard daily dose in decoction for this formula is 93 grams. Because of the 10:1 concentration ratio and the efficiency of our manufacturing process it would take only 13 capsules per day of Blue Poppy's version of this formula to equal the standard daily dose. The actual prescribed dose should be determined by the practitioner on a case by case basis.
