How Supplements Support Eye Health
Age-related macular degeneration or AMD affects millions of people each year. However, the good news is that with the right supplements to support eye health, this and other age-related eye diseases can be prevented.
What Is Macular Degeneration?
Macular degeneration gradually impairs the center field of vision, either via the formation of deposits or abnormal growth of blood vessels. Both of these impair a person’s ability to see what’s in front of them. Because of this, certain tasks like driving and reading can become impossible to perform as the disease progresses.
Vitamin C, E, zinc, copper, and beta-carotene can help to prevent AMD. Plants make beta-carotene to protect them from the sun and, when consumed, beta-carotene goes directly to the retina. Vitamin C and E are both antioxidants, which protect the eyes from solar radiation. Zinc slows the progression of AMD, and copper is necessary to replace what is lost through zinc supplementation.
Different supplement combinations will be required, depending on the type of AMD, and prevention of the condition can be accomplished by combining supplements with a balanced diet that includes all colors of fruits and vegetables. Check out Forrest Health’s infographic for more on AMD prevention.
