Causes for Insomnia as We Age

Most people might think they need less sleep as they get older. Your elderly parents or grandparents may tell you they only sleep for about five or six hours each evening. However, this is a misconception many people have held for decades. The truth about the recommended time our bodies need for sleep does not change significantly as we get older.

Anti-Aging Supplements

Adults still need between seven and eight hours of restful sleep each night. However, there can be several underlying causes as we age that prevent us from getting a good night’s sleep. These can be broken down into several categories, as follows:

Alcohol/Drug Use

Drinking large amount of caffeinated beverages can affect sleeping patterns. So too, can consuming alcohol on a frequent basis and using tobacco products. Certain over-the-counter and prescription medications taken in the evening can also interrupt sleep cycles.

Mental/Physical

If you are under a lot of stress, feel anxious, or have some other form of mental problem, it can cause problems sleeping. Several different types of medical conditions that affect our physical well-being, like arthritis and dementia, have been known to cause insomnia.

Diet/Environment

Our eating habits play a role in our overall health, well-being, and ability to get a restful night’s sleep. Eating prior to going to bed or eating large amounts of unhealthy foods can result in insomnia. Environmental factors known to cause insomnia could include exercising later in the evening, using electronic devices prior to going to bed, or dealing with excessively noisy neighbors.
