L-tyrosine is a precursor of thyroglobulin which, when iodinated, produces thyroxine and other thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormone production is the sole purpose of iodine in human nutrition. Suboptimal dietary intakes of zinc, copper, or manganese can adversely affect thyroid hormone metabolism.
