Pregnenolone - Steroid hormone precursor with potential neurological applications

Pregnenolone, sometimes called the “mother steroid,” is the natural precursor of all steroid hormones, including androgens, estrogens, corticosteroids, and others. Pregnenolone also acts on GABA receptors in the brain.

Oral pregnenolone supports normal psychomotor performance in stressful environments, and may have cognitive and neuroprotective effects as well.

Pregnenolone is a hormone manufactured from cholesterol in the mitochondria. Pregnenolone levels decline with age, although this hormone is an essential precursor for many other steroids and neurosteroids. Optimal pregnenolone levels are associated with optimal energy levels and cognitive performance.

Uses For Pregnenolone

• Memory Support: Animal studies have reported that pregnenolone may help to enhance memory by modulating N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and gamma aminobutyrate (GABA) (A) receptor activity in the brain. One study suggested that pregnenolone helped promote post-training task learning and memory.*
• Immune Health: One study indicated that the 7-hydroxy metaboites from pregnenolone may help promote healthy immune system response.*
