Background
A permeable or ‘leaky’ mucosal lining of the gut is created when the tight junctions between individual epithelial cells (ecterocytes and colonocytes) become disengaged. This can be caused by use of antibiotics, gastrointestinal infections, poor diet or toxin overload. It is also an integral part of many gastrointestinal diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome.

The presence of a permeable mucosal barrier allows antigens, toxins, allergens and living microorganisms potential access to the systemic immune system and thereafter to distant organs and tissues throughout the body.
