The oregano plant (Origanum Vulgare) is native to the Mediterranean and South Asia. Oregano oil is the essential oil derived from this plant and has a long standing use in the management of certain health conditions. Historically, ancient physicians used oregano oil to treat wounds, venomous bites, and infections of the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. Oregano oil is believed to have anti-septic properties, and was even previously used to clean medical instruments. Oregano oil contains two powerful antioxidants, Cavacrol and Thymol, that are largely responsible for their many positive health effects. The antioxidant activity of these two compounds is believed to be the source of oregano oil’s anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties.
