So why hasn’t melatonin become the mainstream anti-oxidant?
First, when taken by mouth, Melatonin is poorly absorbed (less than 15%). This means that the current dosages (oral and sublingual) cannotmeet the necessary minimum amount of Melatonin (10mgs to 15 mgs absorbed) necessary to work as an antioxidant.
Second, Melatonin is rapidly broken down and excreted, therefore in order to be in the bloodstream long enough to be effective, it needs to be released slowly into the bloodstream.However, the effective antioxidant dosage and it powerful free radical scavenging effect cannot be achieved when absorbed from the intestines. Many companies tout higher doses of Melatonin can be effective when taken under the tongue (sublingually). However, pharmacologically Melatonin is a poorly absorbed compoundthat requires special manufacturing skills to enhance its absorption. Therefore, the companies that attempt to sell a sublingual forms (under the tongue), by combining melatonin, alcohol and sugar cannot appreciably increase the amount absorbed, deliver an adequate antioxidant dosage, or create a slow/sustained release effect to achieve the dosage levels necessary (10mgs to 20mgs absorbed) for Melatonin delivered sublingually to be an effective antioxidant.
