Background
Ginkgo biloba is one of the old traditional herbal remedies in both European and Chinese traditional medicine. The tree itself is one of the oldest lived of all species with some specimens living over 1000 years old. The leaf is the part used for medicinal purposes and it contains three main active components:

• Ginkgolides
• Flavonoids
• Bilobalides

It is important to use standardized extracts and the intake should be between 30 and 100mg of pure ginkgoflavones and 10-20mgs of ginkgolides per day.

THERAPEUTIC APPLICATIONS
The scientific and clinical evidence of efficacy of ginkgo biloba is concentrated around two major physiological systems:

1.Improvement in peripheral blood flow. Here ginkgo biloba is appropriate for conditions such as varicose veins, phlebitis, hemorrhoids, intermittent cloudication (pain resultant from circulatory impairment), Raynaud Syndrome, male impotence and general poor circulation.

The effects are largely due to the fact that the ginkgo actives strongly inhibit platelet-aggregating factor (PAF) which has the effect of thickening the blood and contributes to a strong inflammatory response.

In blind crossover studies by Chung et al, 1999; Jung et al, 1990 and Mouren et al, 1994, all show significant improvement in clinical symptoms resulting from improved blood circulation.

2. Cerebral Insufficiency. In human trials (Le Bars et al, 1997; Allain et al, 1993) especially with the elderly and with measurements ranging from short term memory, period of concentration, task performance and speed of cognitive response, Ginkgo biloba has consistently shown significant clinical benefits.
