TCM Formulation Strategy:
The chief herb, gui zhi, benefits the protective qi to release externally-contracted wind-cold from the muscle layer. The deputy, shao yao, tonifies the nutritive yin to protect from excess sweating. Together with gui zhi, they enhance the ability of the protective qi to dispel pathogenic influences while strengthening nutritive qi. Sheng jiang, which helps the chief herb release wind-cold while treating nausea and vomiting, is one of the assistants. The other assistant, da zao, helps shao yao nourish and harmonize nutritive qi. These two herbs can benefit spleen and stomach qi. The envoy, zhi gan cao, tonifies the spleen and harmonizes the actions of the other herbs. This formula is suited for conditions where the protective qi is unable to guard the exterior and nutritive qi is unable to nourish and stabilize the interior.
