Liver Qi excess with rising yang. Problems in all three of the Yang-stages of diseases resulting from an improper use of purgatives which are used before the disease enters the Yang brightness stage. The externally-contracted pathogenic influence takes advantage of the weakness caused by the purgatives and invades the Interior.

Zhang Zhongjing's formula is an elaboration of Xiao Chai Hu Tang, adding another six herbs. Zhang originally developed it it treat exogenous invasions that had gone into the interior and were then inappropriately treated with purgatives, driving the problem deeper while causing a rising of liver yang. In modern times, it is sucessfully used in a variety of applications where liver qi stagnation allows the rising of liver yang. (From Fratkin: Chinese Herbal Patent Medicines).
