Blueberries Blueberries are one of most extensively studied functional foods. Their deep blue pigmentation is a result of a powerful class of flavonoid compounds known as anthocyanadins. These phytochemicals protect DNA from oxidative damage associated with aging. Tufts University and the USDA found that blueberries contain the highest amount of antioxidant activity among 40 fruits and vegetables tested. Rich in anti-inflammatory salicylates, they have also been found to promote cognitive health. This precious fruit also promotes phase II xenobiotic detoxification, quinone reductase, and helps control the induction of ornithine decarboxylase, thereby promoting normal cell growth. Lemon Peel Besides providing an excellent source of free-radical scavenging bioflavonoids, lemon peel contains phytochemicals that help control the breakdown and destruction of choline in the body, which is important for healthy neurotransmission. Green Tea The scientifically documented benefits of green tea cover a remarkably broad spectrum. Green tea is a potent antioxidant, with free-radical scavenging activity 25 times greater than vitamin E and 100 times that of vitamin C. This action is due to its polyphenol content, estimated to be 30% by weight. Separate from its phenolic compounds, green tea is a source of apigenin, another ornithine decarboxylase modulator that supports normal cell growth. Cumin and Ginger are cell protective and increase the proliferation and activity of the probiotic strains.
