Formula Rationale

This is an empirical formula based on Dr. Fung’s 60 years of clinical experience.

Aging is a natural process, which according to Chinese medicine results in a decrease in fundamental substances, as well as in the slowing of the flow of qi and blood. Thus, there is a greater chance for disharmony and dysfunction among the organs.

The chief materia medica in this formula is lu jiao shuang which is composed of the sediment that remains after boiling deer antler glue. Although its ability to tonify and augment essence and the blood does not approach that of deer antler velvet (lu rong), its retaining effect is stronger. Tang kuei also tonifies the blood; in addition, this herb invigorates the blood. The third strongly tonifying herb in this formula is kirin ginseng (ji lin shen) which is the best quality of ginseng. It tonifies the lung and augments the qi, strengthens the spleen/ stomach, and generates fluids, and benefits heart qi. Another herb that is an overall tonifier is ganoderma(ling zhi).

Since the kidney produces essence which is the basis of an organism’s functioning, other herbs in this formula that tonify the kidney and/or essence including euryale (qian shi), cistanche salsa (rou cong rong), rubus (fu pen zi), rose fruit (jin ying zi), cornus (shan zhu yu), cuscuta (tu si zi), and psoralea (bu gu zhi). These herbs have astringent functions.

Eucommia (du zhong) strengthens the bones and sinews, and also helps lower blood pressure. Lotus seed (lian zi) strengthens the appetite and calms the shen. Ho-shou-wu promotes normal bowel movements and also tonifies the blood. Fennel fruit (xiao hui xiang) regulates the flow of qi and also dispels cold. Rehmannia (shu di huang) regulates blood flow
