Black Raspberries – An Antioxidant Powerhouse!

Dark purplish-black berries—also known as “black caps” or “thimbleberries”—black raspberries (not to be confused with blackberries) are the fruit of the Rubus occidentalis plant, a small shrub native to eastern North America.

They’re known for their high level of antioxidant compounds, especially anthocyanins, which are flavonoids responsible for the vibrant red or blue color of some fruits and vegetables.

What are Anthocyanins?

Anthocyanins are a special class of antioxidant. They’re what make fruits and vegetables so brilliantly colored.

In the plant world, color is much more than beauty. It’s more than how fruit and vegetables attract animals to eat and disperse their seeds.

Anthocyanins cause fruits and vegetables to be red and darker colors (blue, purple and black) to help protect against UV radiation. This helps ensure the survival of the fruit.

But they’re also incredible free radical scavengers – both in the plant and in your body.*

Eat the Rainbow

When it comes to fruits and vegetables, you’re supposed to eat the rainbow to get a wide variety of antioxidants and nutrients. Unfortunately, there just aren’t that many purple and dark purple ones out there.

Worse yet, black raspberries (one of the only fruits on the extreme of the color spectrum) are only in season for about a few weeks out of every year. So getting them fresh is difficult at best.

So if you’re looking to get the full range of benefits out of season, your best bet is to take a supplement.

How to Find a Quality Black Raspberry Supplement

In order to find a high quality black raspberry supplement, there are two visible clues you really want to look for – and one regarding how it’s made.

Color

Black raspberries are really dark purple. So, if your supplement is light pink or anything not remotely close to the original color of the fruit, you’re getting a less-than-stellar product.

Besides, that beautiful color is where all the anthocyanins are located – which is responsible for many of black raspberry’s benefits.

Seeds

Seeds, whether from black raspberries or otherwise, are packed with nutrients. If the manufacturer is using a whole food supplement, you’ll see the seeds in the capsule when you dump out the contents.

Freeze-Dried

The best way to preserve the nutrients of black raspberry is to freeze-dry it as quickly as possible after harvesting
